DCO NEEDS PLAYERS (article first published : 2000-06-19)

The Durban City Orchestra is a well-established amateur orchestra that provides music students and amateur musicians with the opportunity to perform in an ensemble where they gain valuable experience in playing in an orchestra. The DCO is a stepping stone for young musicians to move on to positions in professional orchestras such as the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Conducted by KZNPO member Naum Rousine, the orchestra receives a partial grant from the Durban Arts Association. The leader and the conductor are paid a nominal fee, while the rest of the musicians give freely of their time. The orchestra rehearses every Monday from 19h15 to 21h30 at Durban High School and aims to produce eight concerts a year. These are performed in the greater Durban area.

Past concert programmes have included Haydn's Creation, Faure's Requiem, Fiddler on the Roof and The Pirates of Penzance.

The orchestra is looking for additional amateur players, especially horn, string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), trombone and bassoon players. Those interested should contact Ronald Boom on (031) 266-8623 or by e-mail: dobermann@netactive.co.za The orchestra has a website at http://www.web.netactive.co.za/~kevron/dco.htm
