BIGUINE REFLECTIONS (article first published : 2000-06-17)

The Alliance Française offers an exceptional evening “from Biguine to end” in store with jazz great, pianist Alain Jean-Marie and his trio at 19h30 on July 4.

A world class jazz pianist, Alain Jean-Marie will be in Durban with his trio from Paris for one night when he will performing at the Alliance Française at 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside. Also appearing in the trio are Eric Vinceno (bass) and Jean-Claude Montredon (percussion). The concert takes its title from a series of three recordings, Biguine Reflections, the trio has made over the last ten years. Broadly speaking, the jazz is a marriage of Bebop with the biguine, traditional music from Jean-Marie’s native Antilles in the West Indies.

In 1999, Alain Jean-Marie recorded a solo album, Afterblue. He was nominated as best French jazz soloist for the Django d’Or and he received the Prix Boris Vian de l’Académie du Jazz for the best French jazz album of the year. He has played with jazz legends such as Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt, Art Farmer, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz and Max Roach, to name a few. He is currently considered one of the most important European jazz soloists of our time.

Tickets which include an authentic French meal are R40 (R30 for Alliance members and students). Booking is essential. Drop in or phone the Alliance at (031) 312-9582.
