LOST IN THE STARS (article first published : 2000-06-3)

Lost in the Stars is a poignant, well-written, simple and sincere musical which stays true to its reference, one of the most influential South African novels ever written. Forty years on, this musical version of Cry the Beloved Country, Alan Patonís classic narrative of racial tension and ultimate reconciliation, is a timely reminder of a countryís troubled and turbulent past. The film rights for the novel were snatched up by Alexander Korda within a year of the novelís publication and Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson had written the musical version.

Technikon Natalís department of drama has decided to re-stage its highly successful production of this show which was seen in Durban last year. Now with a different cast as most of the students appearing then have graduated and moved on, Lost in the Stars will again be directed by Jacky Vermaas with musical direction by Juan Burgers. Choreography is by Hugo le Roux and set design by Susan Donaldson Selby.

Performances take place in the Courtyard Theatre from June 13 to 17 at 19h30, thereafter in Pietermaritzburg at the Hexagon Theatre from June 23 and 24. The production then travels to Mbabane in Swaziland to appear at the Mbabane Theatre Club from June 25 to July 1.
