HILTON COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT CONCERTS (article first published : 2008-08-27)

Four Seasons Café – September 13 in the Chapel. Back by popular demand, this concert features a mixed bag of musical styles and genres, arranged to suit the various moods of summer, autumn, winter and spring. The concert is informal and all the music is light in character, but not in quality. Featuring various acclaimed choirs, ensembles, bands and soloists based at the Hilton College Music Department. Tickets R50.

Rutter’s Gloria – September 12 at 20h00 in the Chapel. Featuring the Festival Brass Ensemble and Voices Students Chamber Choir from Bloemfontein and following their appearance at the KKNK in 2005. They have been labelled as a “jewel” of the Free State University by Die Burger. Under the leadership of Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg and Leona Geldenhuys, this programme features amazing rhythmic effects and interesting combinations of voice and instruments. Rutter’s Gloria is the highlight of this programme that will also include works for brass ensemble. Tickets R75.

Talking Drums Interactive Drumming – September 13 at 13h45 (45 mins) and 15h45 (60 mins) and September 14 at 11h00 (45 mins) and 13h15 (60 mins) in the Music School. A percussion workshop giving a basic introduction to playing the Djembe and various percussive toys. Somewhere inside of everyone there is a rhythm, and it is this rhythm that we persuade to join us in an interactive session!! Every participant is handed a Djembe and is then with the group interactively involved in playing this instrument and a variety of percussive instruments. By the end of the session, the participants are playing, whilst we listen! Tickets R30 for 45 minute workshop and R60 for 60 minute workshop.

Evensong – September 13 at 18h00 and September 14 at 18h00. The Sine Nomine Singers return to this year's Festival with their usual Choral Evensong in the Chapel. The canticle settings are by the English 17th century composer, Thomas Tomkins, a fairly prolific composer of music for the Anglican Church. In addition, the Introit, Anthem, Responses, and Psalm chant are by Tomkins, and this makes this service a unique opportunity to hear exactly what might have been sung on an evening at Worcester Cathedral during the composer's tenure there. His setting of When David Heard, which the choir will sing as the anthem, is one of the great examples of Anglican choral writing from this time.

Tomkins was born in 1572. By 1620 he had been appointed a member of the Chapel Royal, and later became Master of the Choristers and Organist at Worcester Cathedral. He held the latter position until 1646, when Republican forces, in their Puritan fervour, dissolved the musical establishment there, and removed the organ.

Entrance is free, but there will be a retiring collection to defray expenses.

Festival-goers are strongly advised to book accommodation early at one of the many B&Bs and hotels in the area. Booking kits are available from selected SPAR Stores in KZN. Kits can also be collected from Exclusive Books (La Lucia, Pavilion, Liberty Mall and Gateway), Adams in Musgrave Centre and Durban town, Cascades Bookshop and the Witness offices in Pietermaritzburg, and the Hilton College Theatre. They are also available at the ArtStand at Essenwood Craft Market and from leading galleries and theatre foyers. Detailed information can be found on www.artslink.co.za/hilton
