8th ANNUAL MASSED ORCHESTRAL CONCERT (article first published : 2008-08-16)

The Indoor Sports Centre on UKZN’s Westville Campus is the place to be on August 17, 2008 at 14h30 for the Corobrik Orchestra 2008 concert – music lovers are urged not to miss this special event which always proves to be a fun and lively afternoon's entertainment. This year sees the project’s 8th anniversary and players are set to come from all over KZN for the opportunity to play as a massed orchestra with much-loved conductor, Richard Cock. It is a unique concert and a popular part of the Durban music calendar.

The “Orchestra” concert project aims to bring together musicians from all age and race groups for a musical concert with a massed orchestra to serve the interests of the arts, culture and musical education in Durban.

Anyone who can read and play music is encouraged to participate – over 180 individual musicians have registered to play in this year's concert, not including the members of the Field Marching Band and the Steel Drum Foundation who are popular participants in the event. The massed orchestra will perform a variety of pieces including works by Lloyd Webber, Coates, Strauss and will mark Leroy Anderson’s anniversary with two of his fun pieces.

Popular works include a Best of the Beatles medley, Mango Grooves’ Special Star and the finale piece Shosholoza. The KZN Youth Orchestra will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slav as a special item. The audience will be welcomed at 14h30 by an outdoors performance by the Field Band Foundation’s marching brass band and their dancers followed by an energetic performance by the Steel Drum Foundation.

Sincere thanks go to Corobrik and BASA for their valued project support and to the Department of Arts & Culture Ethekwini Cluster; Nestle Water; Pavilion Music, Knowles Spar and the Lanyard Company for their support and assistance. The concerts have done much to generate a renewed interest in amateur performing while supporting and creating awareness for the arts in KZN. The last seven concerts were a resounding success, so make a diary note for the 8th!

Corobrik Orchestra 2008 takes place at 14h30 on August 17 at the Indoor Sports Centre, Westville Campus, UKZN. Tickets R40 (R30 pensioners/students/children) available from 124 Davenport Road, Glenwood or from the door on the day. There is unreserved seating. Further details about registration as a musician and/or booking tickets from the organisers, the British Cultural & Heritage Association/1820 Settlers on 031-2026174 or e-mail orchestra@global.co.za
