TWO ORCHESTRAS IN ONE NIGHT (article first published : 2008-08-7)

On August 14 at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall, the KZNPO and the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre Orchestra come together for a gala symphony concert that marks the launch of the KZNPO's 25th Anniversary Celebration Series.

The programme boasts highlights from Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin and the composer's masterful Symphony No. 5.

Operatic soloists from the visiting company, soprano Elena Dementieva, tenor Vladimir Cheberyak, baritone Yuri Devin and bass Gennady Rodionov, will perform highlights from Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin including Kuda, kuda, kuda vi udalilis (Lenski's aria) and Lyubvi Vsye Vozrasti Pokorni (Prince Gremin's aria). The second half features Symphony No. 5.

The Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Ekaterinburg is one of the oldest theatres in Russia and opened in 1912. The company has performed in over 20 countries and in over 100 cities in the former USSR, presenting varied repertoires that include approximately 40 operas and ballets, with daily shows, 270 performances a season and more than 250,000 people exposed to the Theatre annually. The concert will be conducted by Sergey Ferulev, who conducts symphonic music, operas and ballets.

This concert promises to be a magical experience with over 100 musicians on stage from the two orchestras.

KZNPO WSS subscribers are offered free entrance in gratitude for their support over the years.

The concert takes place on August 14 at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall. Tickets are available from Computicket at R80 for blocks A and B and R50 for all other seating. More information on 031 369 9438.

NB: The Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is in Durban for the African premier of Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta” (see separate article on these pages). Performances will be held on August 12 and 13 at 19h30 in the Playhouse Opera. Ticket prices range from R130 to R290 booked through Computicket on 0839158000 or www.computicket.co.za
