FRESHLYGROUND AT DBG (article first published : 2008-07-19)

Mr Price and the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens welcome Freshlyground once again to the Durban Botanic Gardens on July 27. This presents Durbanites with another chance to support South Africa’s No 1 band while enjoying fabulous picnic fare on a sunny Sunday afternoon in this beautiful lake setting.

Since its formation in 2002, Freshlyground has become one of South Africa’s most respected rock bands gaining international recognition winning the 2006 MTV Award for the Best African Act. They have successfully incorporated elements of traditional South African music, blues and jazz, as well as indie rock in their music and the distinctive voice of Zolani Mahola gives the band its unique sound.

The band comprises seven highly talented musicians who come from divergent backgrounds but together make music which captures the essence of Africa. They have performed around the world to great acclaim and have just completed their second Album Nomvula.

Vocalist Zolani, born in the Eastern Cape, is exuberant in her delivery of the catchy melodies and soulful ballads. She is joined by Aron who grew up in the Karoo and plays keyboard. Simon from Zimbabwe makes magical music on the flute and adds a truly African sound when he plays the mbira in the typical Zimbabwean style. Julio who hails from Mozambique, with his lightning quick fingers plays lead guitar, diminutive Kyla-Rose from Johannesburg makes a distinctive sound as she plucks her violin, and seasoned musicians Josh on bass and Pete on drums provide a wonderful rhythm combination to complete the group.

Spoonfeedas will open the concert at 14h30. This local melodic pop rock band led by Peter Guthrie on vocals, keyboard and guitar, comprises four highly talented musicians. The band has enjoyed huge success and plays at many venues around South Africa. Overseas travel has given the band greater recognition and they are all proudly South African.

Tickets R120 (R20 for children six to twelve) pre-booked through any Computicket outlet or on 083 915 8000. Tickets will also be on sale from the Info Centre in the Durban Botanic Gardens - credit cards accepted - sorry no cheques.
