THE WIZARD OF OZ (article first published : 2008-07-19)

The Wizard of Oz will get the royal KickstArt treatment when it comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre in August. KickstArt is Durbanís foremost theatrical production company responsible for all the annual family pantos in the traditional style; such as last yearís Aladdin as well as award-winning productions like The Jungle Book; The Road to Mecca; The Mystery of Irma Vep; Oleanna and, most recently, Shirley Valentine.

The Wizard of Oz will be directed by Steven Stead and designed by Greg King with musical direction by Evan Roberts.

The delightful family fantasy musical about Dorothy and her dog Toto and their fantastical adventures along the Yellow Brick Road is based on the popular L Frank Baum stories.

Dorothy and Toto are caught in a tornado's path and end up in the magical land of Oz where her journey introduces them to the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion in their quest to meet the Wizard of Oz who will help them before the Wicked Witch of the West catches up with them!

The cast is headed by Carol Trench who plays Dorothy. She is supported by Bryan Hiles (Hank/Scarecrow); Darren King (Hickory/Tin Man); Peter Court (Zeke/Lion); Clare Mortimer (Miss Gultch/Wicked Witch of the West); Belinda Henwood (Glinda, Good Witch of the North); Michael Gritten (Professor Marvel/Wizard of Oz); Rowan Bartlett (Uncle Henry/Lord Growlie); Alison Cassels (Aunt Em/Lady Growlie); Francis Currie (Gloria Growlie) and a chorus of children.

The Wizard of Oz runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from August 16 to September 7.
