OPERA KINGS (article first published : 2008-07-15)

Durban's much-loved young Opera ensemble, the Opera Kings, will perform a concert at the Pinetown Catholic Church on July 19 at 14h00. The Opera Kings, a four-member male vocal group comprising graduates and current students from the UKZN Opera School and Choral Academy includes Kwazi Makhanya (tenor), Msizi Mnyandu (tenor), Mhlaba Buthelezi (tenor) and Melusi Kubheka (baritone) - have been delighting audiences throughout KwaZulu-Natal since their launch in 2006.

The Kings, as they are often called, will perform selections from the opera, light popular, sacred and classical repertoire. Passionate about singing and their carefully selected repertoire, the Opera Kings have received several accolades since their inception including an invitation to perform at the National Old Mutual Choir Festival held at the ICC in Durban and the Human Science Research Council International Conference in Pretoria in 2007.

The concert at the Pinetown Catholic Church will include selections of sacred music including The Holy City, Ave Maria; light classical selections such as O Sole Mio and You'll Never Walk Alone as well as some popular music including Unbreak My Heart and the Josh Groban favourite You Raise Me Up. Local tenor Mhlaba Buthelezi will be featured at this concert. Mhlaba is currently on vacation from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he is completing his postgraduate studies in Opera Performance.
