BEATROUTE & BACKLINE AT SUNCOAST (article first published : 2008-06-21)

The free Sunday Jazz Sessions at Suncoast are creating a buzz. With the young student bands groomed to show off their skills and the main bands featuring some of our finest musicians the session has a reputation for delivery an afternoon of quality entertainment. Make a date with Suncoast and come and groove to some hot local jazzers on the last Sunday of every month.

On June 29, the opening band will be Backline, which hails from Chatsworth and comprises the versatile Karun Pillay on keyboards, Tyrell Soobramoney on bass, Pravin Giandhari on drums and Avika Maney on saxophone. The band performs a variety of musical styles, expanding their jazz repertoire with R&B favourites, some funk and fusion.

Beatroute will be the main feature for the day a great band-about-town which features veteran guitarist and composer Gerald Sloan along with Dan Sheldon on trumpet and Logan Byrne on double bass. The quartet is completed by Tony Muirhead on drums. Beatroute play a beguiling combination of Latin and Swing tunes and deliver a quality jazzy sound that is very pleasing. To round off the repertoire Sloan adds a few of his own compositions and also handles vocals.

The Suncoast Sunday Jazz Sessions take place at 14h00. For more information contact Suncoast Marketing on 031 328 3000 or visit www.suncoastcasino.co.za
