AUDITION FOR TOTO (article first published : 2008-06-14)

Durban’s multi-award winning theatre company KickstArt is to hold "dog auditions" for its forthcoming production of The Wizard Of Oz. Toto is the little dog that plays a vital role in this classic, magical trip down the Yellow Brick Road, and will share the spotlight with one of Durban's best-loved actresses, Carol Trench. So it is crucial to find a little canine actor with the right star qualities!

An open "audition" will be held on June 29 at 11h00 at the Essenwood Craft Market park and all owners of small, well-behaved dogs are invited to bring them to audition. It doesn't matter what breed of dog they own but the following details are crucial. The dog should be small enough to be picked up and held comfortably. It should be used to being handled, and of a docile nature. “We don't want it nipping Dorothy while she sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow", quips director Steven Stead.

The dog must be on a leash at the "audition" and used to being on a leash, as it will have one on stage as well. It should be comfortable around large groups of people. Well-trained, obedient dogs are obviously preferred for obvious reasons!

“We will of course take very good care of our star!,” adds Steven. “As remuneration for appearing in our production, we will provide the owner with petrol money for doing the ferrying to and from the performances over the three week season, ten tickets for the show, and we will supply a month’s supply of dog food for the chosen pooch.”

The dates the dog will be required are from August 10 to September 7. Rehearsals onstage at The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre start on August 14, and the performances begin from August 17. “We'd like to introduce him/her to the cast before we get on stage, and allow the starlet to get familiar with its co-stars, hence the starting date being August 10,” explains Steven.

The Wizard Of Oz will have performances from August 17 to September 7, Wednesday to Saturday at 19h00. There will be matinees on Saturday and 14h30 and Sunday at 14h00. There are also two special schools' performances on August 26 at 11h00 and September 2 at 13h00.

There is no need to book an appointment for the audition. Just arrive with your best friend on a leash at the Essenwood Craft Market park on June 29 at 11h00.
