BRYAN CRUMPLER FOR HILTON COLLEGE (article first published : 2008-05-12)

Memorable Concerts is an initiative of www.classicsa.co.za in association with Hilton College Music.

Bryan Crumpler, the American clarinet virtuoso who has been dazzling international audiences with his charismatic stage presence, technical ability and exceptional musicality will perform the second concert in the Memorable Concert series at Memorial Hall, Hilton College, on May 18.

Bryan’s talent was discovered when a clarinet was given to him as a gift. He took to the instrument immediately, discovering a talent that would serve as the foundation for his rise to international acclaim. By the age of 14, less than 18 months after taking up the clarinet, Bryan memorized the Mozart Clarinet Concerto by ear by simply listening to a recording of the work. His efforts were not in vain as it earned him the opportunity to perform this concerto with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, after winning their regional concerto competition several months later.

Since this debut at the age of 15, Bryan’s career as soloist and chamber musician has flourished. His unconventional and passionate style of performance has fascinated die-hard music lovers and inspired many young musicians over the past years.

His achievements as musician include winning the prestigious jury prize in the 14th bi-annual edition of the 2006 Dos Hermanas International Clarinet Competition in Spain. He has performed in the USA, the Netherlands, England, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain and Italy to great acclaim. Being a sought-after chamber musician, he has been invited to play at renowned classical music festivals, such as the Tuscania International Chamber Music Festival in Italy and the Klara Festival of Flanders in Brussels. He has released two highly successful CD recordings.

Bryan enjoys playing a wide range of repertoire but favours classical music. He has a strong interest in modern classics and makes a point of performing rarely heard works by living composers.

For his recital at Hilton College, Bryan will perform works by Schumann, Von Weber, Brahms, Poulenc, Pavkovic, Williams and Rosenblatt. He will be accompanied by accomplished South African pianist Francois du Toit.

The recital takes place on May 18 at 15h00. Tickets R75 include complimentary tea/coffee and cake to be enjoyed in the college’s imposing wood-panelled Dining Hall during interval. Bookings on 033 383 0126.
