DAN PATLANSKY LIVE (article first published : 2008-05-9)

Dan Patlansky, blues guitarist extraordinaire (an understatement if there ever was one) was scheduled to play this week at the Catalina Theatre, but the ill fated theatre faced closure from the end of April, to the dismay of very many people, least of all the owner impresario, Themi Venturas. This had been given much press publicity and at the eleventh hour Rainbow Chicken threw a life line by means of a meaningful investment and the theatre will remain open. As a result, true to the old adage, "the show must go on Dan Patlansky Live is being performed after all, albeit for the very short season scheduled.

Incredible energy is displayed by Dan Patlansky and the drummer, Sam Peterson, who hails from Atlanta and who is obviously enjoying bashing away on drums and both are ably supported by Mr Fellows (I didn't catch his first name), the third member of the team, on base guitar. Dan Patlansky also displays his vocal ability in some of the numbers but his well-deserved international reputation and amazing versatility on guitar must be seen and heard, it cannot be described adequately in a review of this sort.

He makes the guitar talk, in no uncertain terms. Blues may not be everyone's cup of tea and he mentioned in one of his rare comments that they are touring the country, playing at various universities, to show the younger generation that blues should not be relegated to ‘the music of their old dads” but can be enjoyed by the young as well. Indeed, in his hands, the Blues have very much a rock and jazz touch. Although he now resides in Durban, he has performed with top luminaries and at some of the best venues in the world. More information can be obtained from his web site www.danpatlansky.com

The show is performed in a longer first part before the interval, as Dan Patlansky affirms to give full justice to the music, and then a shorter part after the interval. The very enthusiastic almost full house wanted more and more and loved the show. Blues might not be everyone's taste, but if you are a Dan Patlansky fan, and there must be many, and/or a lover of Blues get to the Catalina Theatre, at Wilson’s Wharf, quickly as the show is only on from May 6 to 11 at 20h00. Booking is through 031 305 6889. – Maurice Kort
