PIETER SCHOEMAN (article first published : 2008-03-24)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Music presents internationally acclaimed violinist Pieter Schoeman on March 31. He will perform Brahms Violin Sonata No.3 in D minor, Brahms Horn Trio and the Beethoven Violin Sonata in D minor, Op.12, No 1 with the KZNPO's principal french horn player Sorin Osorhean and UKZN's Piano lecturer Liezl-Maret Jacobs.

Schoeman has recently been appointed as Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) under Vladimir Jurowski. Born in South Africa, he made his solo debut with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten. Since then he has performed as soloist throughout the world including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Moscow's Rachmaninov Hall, Capella Hall in St. Petersburg and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. As a chamber musician, he regularly performs at London's prestigious Wigmore Hall.

In 1995, Schoeman became Co-Concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in France. During his tenure in Nice, he performed frequently as Guest Concertmaster with the symphony orchestras of Barcelona, Bordeaux, Lyon, Baltimore (USA) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra which led to his appointment with the LPO.

Schoeman's solo playing has been described by the London Times as “...rapturous, sweet toned...” while the Baltimore Sun wrote “...exquisite refinement and tenderness.” The London Independent noted “Schoeman's tone was distinguished by its purity” and The Strad thought his Wigmore Hall performance “was magnificently, almost overwhelmingly, done.”

This concert takes place at UKZN's Howard College Theatre on March 31 at 19h30. Tickets: R50 (R20 concessions). Bookings or enquiries on 031 260 3353 or e-mail: marid1@ukzn.ac.za
