CON CAMPBELL AT HEX (article first published : 2008-03-21)

The Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg offers a night of jazz, blues and gospel on March 31. Con Campbell plays saxophone all around Australia, and speaks about what makes jazz tick. He also thinks that jazz relates to life, freedom, and Jesus.

Con studied jazz performance at The Canberra School of Music, ANU. He was the recipient of the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship in 1995, and recorded his self-titled album with Morrison at the age of 19. After having been identified by Morrison as an exciting new talent in Australian jazz, Con has performed at The Monterey Jazz Festival (USA), The Wangarratta Jazz Festival, The Australian Jazz Festival, The Manly Jazz Festival, The Basement, and Soup Plus, among other notable venues and locations. He has performed for the Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA) and Jazzgroove, and has performed in bands with James Morrison, Don Burrows, John Morrison, The Idea of North, Serge Ermoll, Alan Turnbull, Craig Scott, Cathy Harley, Jonathan Zwartz, Lily Dior, Sean Wayland, Brendan Clarke, Gary Daley, Peter Kohlhoff, David Goodman, Phil Stack, Toby Hall, Eric Ajaye, and Felix Bloxsam, among many other wonderful musicians.

Appearing on various recordings, Con also performed on and co-produced the album The Gospel According to Groove, with James and John Morrison, Vanetta Fields, and The Idea of North. His latest album, Freedom in the Groove, features Evelyn Duprai and a 30-piece gospel choir.

The Jazz Evening with Con Campbell takes place on March 31 at 19h30 at the Hexagon Theatre. Tables seat 10 a cash bar is available and patrons are free to bring a picnic but no drinks. Tickets R40 booked on 033 260 5537 or email hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
