MADALA AT JAZZY RAINBOW (article first published : 2008-03-15)

Secluded from the entire buzz in the heart of Durban’s social night life, is an exclusive club cum lounge that strives to provide cosmopolitan international and local tastes and standards. The Jazzy Rainbow in Morningside is run with high standards in service, and management has over 25 years of experience in the hotel industry in Europe.

The publicity material promises that from the minute you walk through the door of this smart, air-conditioned music lounge, you will be greeted by a splendid sense of relaxation. The venue boasts stylish trend-setting African décor, with comfortable couches and a fully equipped sound system for live entertainment. Guests are accommodated in a casual lounge. Jazzy Rainbow serves a wide variety of drinks and only serves bar snacks.

The Jazzy Rainbow is currently setting itself up to be one of eThekwini’s key music venues with a series of live music sessions at the venue called Unplugged Repertoire. There is a desperate need for such venues to showcase Durban’s finest musical talents and these music sessions will be held regularly to encourage Durban’s socialites to venture into something different from the monotonous clubbing style of entertainment.

In an effort to achieve this, Jazzy Rainbow through Slingshot Management will present the legendary Madala Kunene on March 27. Known to many simply as Bafo, Madala Kunene has been proclaimed as the king of the Zulu guitar. He has performed worldwide and collaborated with some of South Africa’s most influential musicians such as Busi Mhlongo and Sipho Gumede. His catalogue of works also includes international names such Max Lasser and Airto Moreira.

“Madala Kunene is the perfect candidate to initiate these music sessions at Jazzy Rainbow,” says Fezisa Mdibi of Slingshot Productions. “He will compliment the venue very well with his enigmatic sounds. The venue has such a relaxed ambience which is ideal for Bafo’s acoustic sounds as his music soothes one’s mind after a hectic day.”

The event will start at 20h00 with a cover charge of R60.00. The Jazzy Rainbow is situated at 93 Goble Road, it takes about 100 people and adheres to a smart dress code. For more information on the event, contact Fezisa Mdibi on 031 312 5299.
