SINGING MASTERCLASS WITH UK MUSICIANS (article first published : 2008-02-23)

Njabulo Madlala, a South African baritone now based in the UK, will visit Durban in April to present a masterclasses with UK musicians. The purpose is to allow international musicians and artists to visit South Africa to discover and help talented artists.

I am bringing a few other musicians who were very keen on coming to South Africa and helping young singers by giving back what we have been to learn during our years of study and performing in the UK,” explains Njabulo.” The other musicians referred to are South African pianist James Bellieu, British pianists Alice Turner and James Wilshire and finally the Spanish Bass Javier Borda. All these musicians have been my colleagues during the time I have worked with many leading music societies in this country and abroad.

“We hope that this kind of a project will become a yearly event of international interest,” adds Njabulo. “This is really our contribution towards those who believe that the notion of an “African renaissance” should not only be about rediscovering and demonstrating our innermost African nature, culture and traditions, but should also involve finally absorbing the unparalleled gems of European cultures.”

The Playhouse has been booked as a base for these workshops which will take place from April 1 to 13 and invitations are offered for some 25 good singers who must have an interest in Classical music and desirous of becoming opera singers or song recitalists.

The two weeks intensive Opera Masterclass & Workshops for Singers will run from April 1 to 13 at the Playhouse Company in Durban. Singers must be available for the duration of the masterclass period. The Masterclass will be free for singers and refreshments will be provided during the sessions. Singers from the Universities, Choirs and Private teachers may apply (solo singing experience is not a necessity, though an advantage) and all participants must be prepared to learn opera arias, ensembles and songs from the classical repertoire.
