MOTOWN FOR EVER! (article first published : 2007-12-26)

Motown for Ever!, the story of Tyrone King and his take on the Motown era of history and its impact on a group of ouens from Wentworth, comes to the Catalina Theatre in Wilsonís Wharf at the tail end of the festive season.

Writer / director / actor Hamish Kyd has assembled a sparkling cast of vibrant and talented performers including Grant Jacobs (Sasol Fever); Anthony Joseph and Rory Booth (an Actors Co-Op regular, who was also in Sasol Fever). The women in the cast are Portia Zungu, Cindi Ngidi and Praline Ross.

Hamish Kyd plays the narrator Tyrone King who narrates the story from his prison cell where he is serving time for allegedly murdering his wife.

The Motown hits are interspersed with a poignant personal story. Kyd created the original Motown Story with the late Mervyn Goodman for the Playhouse Cellar in the heyday of this iconic supper theatre venue. His idea has been updated and revisited, and using similar Motown hits, now involves a new storyline and exciting new cast.

Motown Records is a record label founded in Detroit, Michigan in the 1950ís. Detroit was known as "Motor City", which led to the labelís name. From its small-town roots it achieved widespread international success and has had a lasting effect on the music industry. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music as it was the first record label to feature primarily African American artists and to be owned by an African American.

Artists which found a home on this label include The Miracles, The Supremes, The Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Jackson Five, The Four Tops, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder and more recently, BoysllMen. It has been making music since the 1950s and still operates currently.

The Motown record label influenced an entire generation of music and its effect was felt globally. In the demarcated Coloured areas of greater Durban, the impact of Motown was keenly felt and it shaped and inspired a way of thinking, dressing, dancing and music making.

Motown for Ever! runs at Catalina Theatre from January 15 until February 17 and is suitable for the whole family. Shows Tuesday to Saturday nightly at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00) with no show on Mondays. Every Tuesday and Sunday, tickets are two for the price of one, subject to availability. More information or to book from Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
