ROCK, RATTLE AND ROLL (article first published : 2007-12-3)

After a sold out run in August, the hugely popular show Rock, Rattle and Roll makes a return appearance at the Hexagon in Pietermaritzburg to boogie audiences in to the festive season!

The Rock 'n Roll era gave birth to delightfully upbeat numbers like Good Golly Miss Molly, Tutti Frutti, Devil in Disguise and Sweet Little Sixteen, numbers which inspire the rest of the performance. The show includes a tribute to "the day the music died" with songs by those artists: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Also represented are Cliff Richard, The Platters and Elvis Presley, alongside popular numbers by the Mamas and the Papas, Patsy Cline, Dean Martin, the Four Jacks and a Jill, and Fats Domino. The famous numbers are sung, side by side with a few lesser known ones.

The cast once again includes popular local singers Sandra Styles, Tammy and Ryan Calder, and Derrick Zuma (whose version of Splish Splash had in the audience rocking!). Helen Vermaak is the musical director and accompanist, and she has given the good old numbers a fresh new sound that is guaranteed to delight and entertain. The show is directed by Peter Mitchell, veteran director of many musicals over the last twenty years.

Rock, Rattle and Roll runs at the Hexagon Dive in Pietermaritzburg for picnic evenings from December 5 to 7 and again from December 14 to 15 at 19h00 for 19h30. Tickets R50 (R45pp for tables of 10 or more). Bring a picnic supper, but no drinks. A cash bar is available. Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
