2007 CLASSICAL PERFORMERS COMPETITION (article first published : 2007-10-24)

The University of KwaZulu-Natalís School of Music will present the 2007 Classical Performers' Competition on October 26 and 27 at Howard College Theatre, UKZN.

This competition, which provides an excellent performance opportunity for young performers from KZN, is open to both UKZN Music students and scholars between the ages of 10 and 18. The competition is adjudicated, in separate categories, by a panel of three music experts selected from across the region.

The competition is a prestigious performance occasion for local performers and their teachers. The School of Music has announced the addition of two new prizes: the Dean's Prize of R1,500 awarded to the overall winner in the university students' category, and the CLASSICfm Prize of R1,500 which will be awarded to the overall winner in the scholars' category. Both winners will appear as soloists in a performance with the KZNPO at a Campus Concert at UKZN in 2008.

Other prizes include music store vouchers and cash prizes generously sponsored by the UKZN Faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences; Roland; Musikland; Gateway & Pavilion Music stores and Adams Book Shop. The Audience Prize is always a highlight of the competition where members of the audience have the option of making a donation towards a ballot paper - the total amount collected will be awarded to the soloist who wins the most votes!

Winners of all categories will perform in a public concert on October 27 at 19h30 at Howard College Theatre. Tickets R40/R20. Bookings and enquiries through Debbie Mari on 031 260 3353 or email: marid1@ukzn.ac.za
