DEVIL IN DISGUISE (article first published : 2007-10-24)

The Enact Theatre Company brings their latest production Devil in Disguise to the Supernova at Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World from November 15 to 17.

Enact is a theatre production company that has a 24 year history in the industry. The Ensemble of Artists Communicating through Theatre (ENACT) is a performing arts group established in late 1985 in reaction to the (then) imminent closure of Stable Theatre. An independent, non funded organisation, which relies on the proceeds of productions to sustain itself, ENACT now comprises a group of artists, (actors, writers, dancers and musicians) who produce plays in a professional/ semi-professional capacity.

Spearheaded by Durban-based comedians Vivian Moodley, Pranesh Maharaj, Selvan “Tintin” Pillay, Devil in Disguise showcases the talented Shika Budhoo and new singing sensation Patrick Carl Moodley. The show features a decidedly ‘curvy’ devil who has become disenchanted with the attractions of hell and has designs to become an Elvis Presley reincarnate.

Mixing music and comedy, Devil in Disguise also features the musical talents of internationally acclaimed Eric "Coolfire" Hadebe and blends the old-time musical favourites in a nostalgic voyage through the 50’s and 60’s.

This show features all the usual suspects, from the Grim Reaper to a cross-dressing demon and the dearly departed who have made their way to the gates of Hades instead of St Peter’s. The characters are engaged in a farcical trade-off with the Devil and company, which leads to much hilarity and miscommunication. In the style of the Rocky Horror Picture Show meets the Carry On series, Devil in Disguise is sure to tickle the funny bones and make audiences appreciate Durban’s talent at its best.

Actor and director Vivian Moodley boasts a 30 year career in theatre, radio, television and film. He has appeared in productions from the early 70’s to date. The voices of Pranesh and Shika can be heard over the airwaves of Lotusfm in Radio Drama.

A consummate and versatile performer, Shika Budhoo received the Best Actress award for her performance in To House earlier this year and she also appeared in Spice ‘n Stuff at the Catalina Theatre. Pranesh Maharaj was one of the voices behind the popular Lotusfm comedic duo Styles and Kogilan in the morning series, The Waiting Room. One of Durban’s most exciting new actors, he has performed in other professional stage productions such as The Coolie Odyssey, To House and Spice ‘n Stuff..

Patrick Moodley, a Durban musician with the band Friends, blends the old time hits with a modern flair. Tintin is a theatrical old hand who has appeared in productions from Durban to Grahamstown while Coolfire is well-known as South Africa's leading Jemba drummer and reportedly “stole the show” at the recent Rita Marley concert.

Guaranteed to make you laugh, Devil in Disguise is a twist on the usual after-death experience with characters that smack of Wentworth and Chatsworth. Tickets available from NuMetroCine Centre and Computicket. The show is rated PG 13. For further information please contact Vivian Moodley on 084 760 1096 or via email at enact@renweb.co.za
