DEATH OF LUCKY DUBE (article first published : 2007-10-22; last edited : [an error occurred while processing this directive])

South Africa’s internationally acclaimed reggae singer, Lucky Dube, was shot and killed in an attempted hijacking in Johannesburg on October 18. He was dropping off his son at his uncle’s house and his teenage daughter was with him in the car. A vehicle which had been following him opened fire whereupon it appears that, although wounded, Lucky Dube tried to drive off but lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a tree and died.

Friends and colleagues who rushed to the scene - poet Mzwakhe Mbuli and singers Deborah Fraser and Ringo Madlingozi as well as Lucky Dube’s guitarist Skipper Shabalala - have condemned the hijacking which robbed South Africa of one of its icons on the eve of the Rugby World Cup final. As South Africa celebrates its victory on the sports field, the arts world mourns at another irreplaceable loss to crime statistics.

Born in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, on August 3, 1964. Ironically, he was named Lucky because he was born in poor health and his parents did not believe he would survive. He grew up in Johannesburg, moving to Durban after completing his matric. He enrolled at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and graduated after completing a bachelor of science degree. His music career began in the early 80’s when he joined his cousin’s band, The Love Brothers, which played traditional mbaqanga music.
