PIETER JACOBS (article first published : 2007-10-10)

Friends of Music will present a recital by accomplished pianist Pieter Jacobs on October 16.

Apart from his accomplishments as a pianist, Pieter Jacobs is an all round academic, obtaining his BMus from the University of South Africa, parallel with a Bachelors Degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pretoria.

A Fulbright Scholarship and other bursaries from the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust, enabled him to continue his music studies in the United States at the School of Music of Yale University, where he received the coveted Doctor of Musical Arts Degree. As a Visiting Scholar at Boston University, he pursued research, dealing with the mathematical modelling of aspects of the motor control of piano playing.

He has performed extensively in South Africa, Boston, Cambridge and Belgium. His performance interests have encompassed both unconventional and traditional repertoires. He has authored and co-authored articles in international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of music perception and electromagnetism. At present he teaches both in the Music and Electronic Engineering departments at the University of Pretoria. Critics have acclaimed his playing as "powerful, exciting, riveting with at the same time sensitivity for atmosphere resulting in an impressive performance" : Die Volksblad

His programme includes for Friends of Music includes Mozartís Sonata in F Major KV 332 and Rondo in A, KV 511 and Prokofievís Ten pieces for Piano from ĎRomeo and Julietí, Op 75.

The Prelude Performer, singer Quincy Jansen, is a member of the internationally acclaimed Kearsney College Choir who passed his Trinity Grade 8 examination with distinction.

The Pieter Jacobs recital takes place at 19h45 on October 16 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road. Tickets R70 (R60 member and R20 students/orchestral members). There is safe parking. Book at Computicket
