SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR (article first published : 2007-08-19)

From Europe to the United Kingdom and Asia, Australia to Canada and the United States of America, Soweto Gospel Choir continues to wow audiences across the globe. In September 2007, this multi international and Grammy-Award winning choir returns home for their first national tour of South Africa. Sponsored by Cell C, the tour begins in Cape Town on September 8, followed by performances in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg, ending with three performances in Durban at the Playhouse.

The choir will debut their new show African Spirit with the theme of ďa spiritual journey, performed with true African SpiritĒ. Repertoire will include songs that deal with the many different aspects of the human spirit, whether the religious spirit (gospel), the spirit of love for another human being (Bob Dylanís Iíll Remember You), the spirit of living together as one nation (World In Union) or just the spiritual love of life.

The Soweto Gospel Choir has had a remarkable 2007. Winning the 2007 Grammy Award for their CD Blessed in the Best Traditional World Music category; they went on to win a SAMA Award for Best Live DVD for Blessed They were also nominated for the 26th International Reggae and World Music Awards held in Harlem in May this year and released their highly anticipated third CD, African Spirit.

Since Soweto Gospel Choirís introduction to the world four and a half years ago, this amazing group has amassed a growing international fan-base. They have appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, performed for Bill Clinton, has sold out concerts throughout the world and sung alongside icons such as Bono, Peter Gabriel, Queen, Diana Ross, Johnny Clegg, Jimmy Cliff and Bebe Waynans. They have recorded with Robert Plant and recently were the support act for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Germany. They also performed for Oprah Winfrey and her guests at Sun City over New Yearís Eve.

Under the direction of Executive Producer/Director Beverly Bryer, notable Musical Director David Mulovhedzi, Associate Musical Director Lucas Bok and Choreographer Shimmy Jiyane, Soweto Gospel Choir draws on the best talent from the many churches and communities in and around Soweto. Performing in six different languages, including English, Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho, Soweto Gospel Choirís earthy rhythms, rich harmonies and charismatic performances create a unique blend of inspiration, soul and celebration of the unique spirit of South Africa.
