NATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION (article first published : 2007-08-11)

The closing date for entries is August 17 for all budding local songwriters to submit their entries into the Vivacious Voice Make Yourself Heard Songwriting Competition.

The winners will take home prizes valued at over R30,000 along with receiving extensive media coverage as well as a Publishing Deal from Planet Pip Music. There is also the added “bonus” that all Pop/Rock submissions will be considered for Solo Artist Shaun V’s debut album due to be recorded in 2008.

Entries are welcomed nationwide, provided they arrive at the Vivacious Offices in Cape Town by the closing date.

The offices of Philip de Villiers, the award-winning singer/songwriter and business entrepreneur who conceptualised the competition, have been inundated with entries thus far, proving that there’s an abundance of raw talent just waiting to be discovered.

“For anyone who has serious songwriting talent, this is the perfect launching pad to jump start a songwriting career,” says Philip de Villiers. “Too often there are talented people writing potential award-winning songs out there but they just don’t have the infrastructure to get the song heard by the necessary people. This is where a competition of this nature comes in – Vivacious Voice will do all it can to assist these songwriters. We welcome anyone to enter – be they established songwriters, or someone who is just starting out and feels they have the gift of songwriting.”

The Make Yourself Heard! Songwriting Competition is open for entries from all musical genres – from Afrikaans to Alternative, Cabaret to Country, Pop Rock to Hip Hop to R&B to Heavy Metal – and all other genres in between. The judging will not be genre-specific, but will be done on the quality of lyrics and melody, and commercial viability. The renowned judges come from different cultural and musical backgrounds, ensuring balanced, objective adjudication.

In conjunction with the competition, Philip will be launching a new 12-week correspondence course version of “The Songwriters Toolkit” to accommodate aspirant songwriters on a national scale who wish to receive the benefit of this course. Two divisions of the competition will be run simultaneously – one for all Cape Town entries (with Philip and Vivacious Voice being based there) and one division for nationwide entries.
