ENSEMBLE HANS GÁL (article first published : 2007-07-20)

Friends of Music is to present a recital by pianist Mark Nixon (S.A./UK); clarinettist Shelley Levy (S.A./UK), and violinist Katalin Kertész (Budapest/UK).

Talented and award-winners Mark, Shelley and Katalin have performed with various singers and instrumentalists all over Europe, Finland and London. Their aim is to explore the music of Gál and other chamber music masterpieces from the Classical period to the present day.

Named after the prolific composer of the same name, The Ensemble Hans Gál consists of six players in its full format and this combination of a trio has been chosen to perform in Durban when it will include his work in their programme. Katalin’s personal connection to the music of Hans Gál comes via her husband, the composer’s grandson.

The programme will feature Han Gál’s Trio for violin, clarinet and piano Op 71 (South African premiere); Brahms’s Sonata for clarinet and piano in F minor, Op 120 No 1; Debussy’s Sonata for violin and piano; Khachaturian’s Trio for violin, clarinet and piano and Bartok’s Contrasts for violin, clarinet and piano.

Hans Gal’s music is very appealing, in a romantic style with a feeling of Brahms or Strauss, superbly constructed - melody and harmony driven. Because of its beautiful colours, Debussy’s Violin and Piano Sonata relates perfectly to the Slavic folk melody and contrasting dance elements of the Khachaturian. The Bartok is a strikingly exciting masterpiece and the rhythmic energy will not fail to have the audience on their feet.

The Prelude Performers will be young recorder players taught by Sandra Breschi.

The concert will take place at 19h45 on August 14 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road. There is safe parking and booking is at Computicket.
