LION KING TICKETS AVAILABLE UNTIL OCTOBER (article first published : 2007-07-4)

Ticket sales for the hit Disney musical The Lion King in South Africa are now open until October 7 and all indications are that they will be snapped up.

The show - which has already been seen by 35 million people around the globe since its debut in 1997 – has been playing to packed houses at the splendid Teatro at Montecasino since it opened in Johannesburg in May.

The Lion King has played in nine countries around the world. South Africa is the 10th country to host a production and in the year that the show celebrates in 10th anniversary. It is also the first Lion King production in the world which will be entirely cast from the country it is playing in. It boasts an entirely local cast of 53 and a 20-member orchestra backed by a technical crew of 70.

Sello Maake Ka-Ncube is Mufasa, a role he played on London’s West End; Buyisile Zama reprises her role as Rafiki; Mark Rayment is the evil Scar; Pierre van Heerden and Peter Mashiga are Pumbaa and Timon while young actor Andile Gumbi is Simba. Other leading roles are played by Lyall Ramsden as Zazu, Tsholo Monedi as Nala, Candida Mosoma as Shenzi, Simon Gwala as Bazai, Michael Bagg as Ed and Zoe Mthiyane as Sarabi.Disney’s The Lion King in South Africa is co-produced by Lebo M and Pieter Toerien.

Ticket prices range from R150 to R450 and sponsor Telkom has bought 40,000 tickets to give to underprivileged students and residents in the townships around Johannesburg (see review on these pages). Booking is at Computicket.
