STEINWAY & SONS (article first published : 2007-06-19)

Steinway & Sons has been seducing musicians and enthralling audiences for more than 150 years. In fact, “a Steinway piano is the only piano which has angel dust on its strings,” according to Jill Richards, virtuoso concert pianist and South Africa’s third member of the Steinway & Sons Artists Roster.

A Steinway & Sons piano is recognised universally as the world’s finest instrument. But for many years, South Africans wishing to audition a new Steinway had to travel abroad. That is, until recently, when Deon van Vuuren, a local Steinway owner, founded Pianoforte (Pty) Ltd and secured the sole rights to import the Steinway & Sons family of pianos. The imported range comprises Steinway, and the Steinway Designed and Engineered mid-level Boston and entry-level Essex uprights and grand pianos. Pianoforte offers prospective owners a choice of 100 styles and finishes to select from.

“Steinway pianos are, and always will be, the finest piano the world has ever known,” explains van Vuuren. “Independent surveys show that Steinway pianos are used in 98 per cent of all concerts and recordings. Forbes magazine lists Steinway pianos in its top ten ‘great investments’. Steinway instruments have also been the preferred instrument of the world’s leading composers and pianists, as attested by the names appearing on the Steinway & Sons Artist Roster.”

The Steinway piano is renowned for its distinctive and incomparable tonality and action. Founder Henry Steinway’s mission statement - to always build the best pianos possible - still guides Steinway & Sons today, by means of continuous, patented, design improvements, the meticulous selection of the finest timber and materials, uncompromising manufacturing standards and painstaking hand craftsmanship, which has been handed down through generations of “Steinway family members.”

Pianoforte’s magnificent showrooms in Cape Town and Sandton are open to all who have an interest in fine pianos. It is an ideal environment to personally audition and select from the Steinway Family of pianos. On display are the Essex for aspiring pianists, the Boston range for the serious pianist and the ultimate Steinway for those who want the very best instrument available. “Steinway & Sons has an expression: No piano appreciates like a Steinway, and there is no piano appreciated as much as a Steinway. A Steinway piano is generally handed down through the generations and, even after years of demanding use, still retains its unmistakable personality,” explains van Vuuren

New owners receive the Henry Z Steinway assurance which guarantees, subject to conditions, a refund of the purchase price of their Essex or Boston when they trade up to a Steinway Grand piano within five years of purchase. This is testimony to the confidence Steinway & Sons has in their middle and entry-level pianos.
