SOUTHERN GYPSEY QUEEN (article first published : 2007-06-18)

Johannesburg-based rock and blues outfit, Southern Gypsey Queen, who originally hail from Molteno in the Eastern Cape, will perform at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom on June 21.

The band, which boasts three albums to its name comprises Gareth Wilson on guitar and vocals, Thys Smit on guitar, Tammy Wilson on bass and vocals and Paul Wilson on drums and vocals.

Their unique retro rock fusion sound coupled with lyrics that are inspiring and consciously written has earned them a strong fan-base and, as a result, they have enjoyed major success at many festivals around the country including Oppikoppi, KKNK, Splashy Fen, Aardklop, STRAB (in Mozambique), Cederberg Festival, The Cape Town Blues Festival, the Durban International Blues festival and Robertson Rocks, amongst others.

A major highlight for the band during 2004 was being included on Karen Zoid's Summer tour. The same year the band had the honour of playing at the Gito Baloi benefit concert after he had been tragically murdered. They still dedicate one of their songs Souls of Africa to Gito and his family every time they play it. Also, in 2004 Southern Gypsey Queen was the opening act for American blues guitarist, Vasti Jackson on his trip to South Africa.

Southern Gypsey Queen’s performance on June 21 takes place at Krakatoa from 21h30. Tickets R50 booked through Sibaya Box-Office on 031 580 5555.
