RAGA ON 200 STRINGS (article first published : 2007-06-16)

A concert of North Indian Classical Music to be held on June 16 in the Durban City Hall features four of the greatest artists India has to offer the world.

The concert is led by santoor (hammered dulcimer) maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma joined by Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (tabla), Pandit Bhawani Shankar (pakhawaj) and Rahul Sharma (santoor).

Santoor (100 stringed hammered dulcimer), is the folk instrument from the valley of Kashmir.

The tour also features a pre-concert talk by leading UK based musicologist, novelist, critic and BBC presenter, Jameela Siddiqi, who will present a 30 minute pre-concert talk on Indian Classical Music and allow for questions. Entry to the talk is free.

The Durban concert is presented by the Aryan Benevolent Home (ABH). Early bookings encouraged, tickets available from Computicket.
