DBC 40 YEARS LATER… (article first published : 2007-05-21)

In 2007 the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir (DBC) is celebrating its 40th year of existence since opening its doors to only 20 pupils on January 23, 1967.

As part of the year long celebrations, the DBC will perform at the Hilton College Theatre, offering two performances: May 25 at 19h30 and May 26 at 15h00.

On invitation, the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir performed at the American Choral Directors’ Association convention, which was held in Miami, Florida. The convention was opened on March 7 with four international choirs performing, on invitation only, and the honour was bestowed upon the DBC to be one of the four choirs. Following the convention, the DBC toured the eastern parts of the USA for a further three weeks with no less than two standing ovations per performance, totalling 23 performances in 19 cities over the span of 28 days.

The Hilton College Theatre now gives the general public the opportunity to experience parts of the programme the USA audiences were able to see. Over the past few years patrons of this magnificent theatre were delighted by the Noël performances of the DBC.

The programme for the Hilton College Theatre is under the direction of Bernard Kruger and offers classical and more contemporary music in the first half, with an African programme taking place in the second half. Some of the numbers include Operator, Cotton Fields and an item by Freddie Mercury. This year’s performances consist of an all new repertoire, so audiences might not hear some of their favourites from years gone by, but are sure to get new favourites right away.

Tickets R70 (R50 Pensioners & Scholars). To book contact the Hilton College Theatre on 033 383 0126, email theatre@hiltoncollege.com or visit www.artslink.co.za/hilton
