RENT (article first published : 2007-05-13)

RENT is a Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, with lyrics and music by Jonathan Larson. The production opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996 and is still playing there as the seventh-longest-running Broadway musical.

Boasting an all-South African cast, RENT is soon to be staged at the newly restored and refurbished 550-seat Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, opening on July 17 followed by a limited season in Cape Town, at the Artscape Theatre from the end of October 2007.

The 22-member cast comprises 17 performers and five band members, combining the attributes of youth, talent and boundless energy together with drive, enthusiasm and passion for the theatre. The eight principal roles are filled by Duane Alexander, Sean V, Taila Kodesh, Sivan Raphaely, Aubrey Poo, Zane Gillion, Thokozani Nzima and Ilse Klink.

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT is a modernised story that follows the lives of a group of Bohemians living in New York City’s East Village over the course of a year as they struggle with relationships, drugs, loss, love, creativity, AIDS and paying their “rent”.

With RENT, acclaimed Musical Director Bryan Schimmel marks his third production for Hazel Feldman working alongside choreographer Jill Somers, technical manager Alistair Kilbee and resident director Craig Urbani.
