DAN PATLANSKY LIVE (article first published : 2007-04-24)

South Africa’s favourite blues guitar virtuoso, Dan Patlansky, returns to the Catalina theatre as part of the Durban International Blues Festival (see separate article). He will appear with his own band April 24 to May 6.

He will launch work from his latest album, Real but will not ignore established signature tunes from his earlier albums True Blues (2004) and Dan Patlansky and the Missippi Muthers – Standing at the Station (2000).

“Dan Patlansky has come a long way since he picked up a guitar at the age of 14 and started playing along to his father's Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd records. He is now considered, alongside Albert Frost, to be one of South Africa's premier blues musicians, and his new album proves why. …It just goes to show that Patlansky has real talent for someone so young, soaking up his influences such as BB King, Albert Collins and Albert King and then churning out some of the best blues this country has ever seen,” says a CD review on Mail and Guardian Online – Isolation Blog.

“What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocaster at the age of twenty five, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime. ….with a blend of accessibility, fervour and fine familiarity, True Blues and the man that created it breaks the mould, buckles the stereotype and blazes a path outstandingly his own," says Jason Curtis in an interview with Patlansky as he launched his second CD.

Patlansky has recently re-located from Johannesburg to spend more time in Durban and already publicly acknowledges the energy, creativity and vitality of the Durban arts community.

Dan Patlansky runs nightly at the Catalina Theatre until May 6 at 19h30 (Sunday at 18h00). Tickets R65 booked at Catalina on 031 305 6889 or Strictly Tickets at www.strictlytickets.com

The Durban International Blues Festival is presented by Durban Africa, the Ethekwini Municipality, the KZN Dept of Arts, Culture and Tourism, The Independent on Saturday, Sun Coast Casino & Entertainment World, Nivea for Men, Wilson’s Wharf and East Coast Radio.
