FOOLS AWARDS 2007 WINNERS (article first published : 2007-04-3)

The fifth annual Fools Awards honouring artists in KZN was held yesterday (April 1) at the Zulu Jazz Lounge in Durban. This online voting initiative run by publicity company Copy Dog - and supported this year by the KZN Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism Ethekwini cluster - drew a record number of votes in support of local artists.

The winners in the general category were: Kevin Ellis (Fashion Designer), Terence Pillay (Writer), Varshan Sookhun of Lotus FM (Radio Personality) and Andrew Verster (Visual Artist).

Winners in the Music category were: Christopher Duigan (Classical Musician), Dan Patlansky (Contemporary Musician), Nosuko Teto (Classical Female Singer), Bulelani Madikizela (Classical Male Singer), Carol Trench (Contemporary Female Singer), Robert Petersen (Contemporary Male Singer), Wouter String Quartet (Classical Music Group), Dockyard Show Band, (Contemporary Music Group), Bravissimo (Classical Music Production) and Latino Magic (Contemporary Music Production).

Winners in the Dance category were: Louise Fraquet (Female Dancer), Quinton Ribbonaar (Male Dancer), Mdu Mtshali (Choreographer), Phenduka Dance Theatre (Dance Company), and Shall We Dance (Dance Production).

Winners in the Theatre category were Neil Stuart-Harris (Costume Design for My Fair Lady), Greg King (Set Design for My Fair Lady), Tina le Roux (Lighting Design for Rashomon), Shirley Berko (Poster Design for Sleeping Beauty), Aaron McIlroy and Steven Stead for D.O.F. and Neil Coppen and Clare Mortimer for Two is the Beginning of the End/ (a tie in the Best Script category), Raeesa Abdul Karrim (Breakthrough Actress), Sean de Klerk (Breakthrough Actor), Shika Budhoo (Actress), Themi Venturas (Actor), Aaron McIlroy (Comedian), Steven Stead (Director), Winnie-the-Pooh (Children’s Production), Rashomon (Student Production), (Student Production), and My Fair Lady (Theatre Production).

Charisma Awards were presented to Shelley McLean, Kirsty Madgin and Belinda Henwood. Impact Awards for outstanding contributions in their particular fields were presented to the Durban Designer Collection, Friends of Music, Karen Bradtke, KickstArt, Lliane Loots, Musho Theatre Festival, Music Revival, Robin Opperman and Time of the Writer.

The prestigious Smart Award for outstanding lifetime contribution to the arts was presented by theatre doyenne Caroline Smart to Themi Venturas.
