SHOMON (article first published : 2007-03-27)

Shomon is an artist who writes and compose her own music. She's been studying music since she was three years old, when she first started with the piano. It was her escape, into a place of unlimited sounds and absolute fun! The greatest discovery of her young life. Her experience of music was fuelled by her father, who would on most nights play guitar and sing to her sister and her to sleep.

By the age of 12, she discovered the language of the guitar and her parents surprised her with an instrument on her 13th birthday. She started composing, and giving life to it - and receiving joy in return - immediately. She received her second guitar; a nylon string Fender; from her mother on her 21st birthday.

Her first experience as a paid musician was performing guitar and voice with her father who sings and plays guitar, harmonica and sax. She was 16 or so and for a year they had weekly slots at two local restaurant/pubs. This ended when she went overseas to live with her mother for a year.

Upon returning to South Africa, she took up private piano lessons but didn't make the time for performing, opting instead to focus on composing for herself and her own healing.

In 2004 she received a full scholarship to study Opera at Sahmyook University. While there she coordinated, choreographed and performed in a gig for the South African Embassy, along with two American guitarists and her partner, Bo Tasker.

Now 24, she has about 30 compositions on her guitar and piano, often composing on whichever instrument is nearest to her in that moment. Then sometimes transposing it on to the other.

She is also a tribal drummer and with Bo has performed at fashion shows, casinos, hotels and music festivals. In May 2005 she sang and drummed at Splashy Fen's Rainbow Village to gratifying response.

Shomon will appear for the first time at Spiga D'Oro at 21h00 on April 2 at 122 Florida Road. More information from Andrew from Slingshot productions on 031 303 3013.
