ICC DURBAN ARENA UNVEILED (article first published : 2007-03-24)

In a glittering evening of who’s who in the Durban community, the magnificent ICC Durban Indoor Arena was unveiled last night to an audience of over 2,500 people. The entertainment presented – mainly – performers from Durban but the highlight of the evening was indisputably the performance by international superstars George Benson and Al Jarreau.

Leading concert promoters, including Hazel and Tony Feldman of Showtime Management (who brought out Benson and Jarreau), expressed their approval of this long awaited venue and commented on the beauty and practicality of the design.

Hopefully now, international acts visiting South Africa will not bypass Durban on their national tour of the country. The impressive Arena has comfortable scarlet red seating, a high ceiling – maybe the next car launch will see the vehicle being “flown in” from the roof – and state-of-the-art equipment.

It was with a strong sense of pride that the audience enjoyed the performance of superstars George Benson and Al Jarreau whose style of music has garnered them millions of fans from all walks of life.

Al Jarreau referred to the venue as a 'beacon' and the national Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe, said; "The ICC Durban and its new indoor arena, The Dube Trade Port and the La Mercy Airport, will provide a symbiotic relationship in entertainment, business and travel."

ICC Durban's chief executive officer, Miller Matola, celebrated what he referred to as 'the birth of a new brand, which would blaze a new trail and open fresh markets for the ICC."

A proud eThekwini Mayor, Obed Mlaba, said that the ICC Durban had exceeded all expectations and he looked forward to having a world-class facility that would assist the city in securing major international concerts and sporting events.

KwaZulu-Natal premier, S'bu Ndebele said; "The opening of this magnificent centre represents the re-birth of the ICC during its tenth operational year and it also represents the re-birth of the province.

ICC Durban Arena can accommodate audiences of up to 10,000. The flexibility of the design allows for numerous configurations to stage a variety of events, including theatrical events, indoor tennis, wrestling, boxing, hockey, gymnastics, motocross and even equestrian events.
