GUY BUTTERY & FRIENDS (article first published : 2007-03-11)

Recently returned from a successful international tour, Guy Buttery will perform at the Ballito Cinema with a few special guests.

Having just performed in Western Australia this year opening for the Violent Femmes as well as performing at the esteemed Big Day Out Festival in Perth, Guy will be off to the UK later this year for a few months when he performs at various festivals and theatres in Europe.

Carving a big name for himself performing around South Africa for the last seven years and having received three separate nominations at the South African Music Awards, as well as being the youngest nominee in the history of the event, Guy Buttery is considered by many to be a national treasure.

Guy has toured, performed and recorded with many of South Africa's musical giants including Vusi Mahlasela, Madala Kunene, Steve Newman, Nibs vd Spuy, Gito Baloi and numerous other African greats. His music has been used for various television programs and documentaries featuring works from his two critically acclaimed album's, both of which have received rave reviews in Africa and the United States.

Next year February, Guy will be touring across South Africa, accompanying the founder of Windham Hill Records and multiple Grammy Award winning, Will Ackerman, performing at all of the countries’ prestigious theatres. Guy's live performances are renowned throughout South Africa and consist of solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar pieces which delve into many genres including folk, maskanda, Celtic, world, etc. using classical and unorthodox guitar techniques.

He also plays sitar and mandolin and each of his shows include a sitar improvisation. Guitars geeks, folkies, acoustic dreamers and the likes, come forward for a very special evening of wood and steel. CD's will be on sale!

Guy Buttery & Friends appear at 19h00 on March 24 at The Ballito Cinema. Tickets R50. More details on 032 946 2951.
