ZULU JAZZ LOUNGE (article first published : 2007-03-5)

The Zulu Jazz Lounge at the Playhouse in Durban has announced a crowd-pleasing line-up for its popular gigs from Thursdays to Saturdays during March. Savour the best in local and international jazz at this world class facility, which provides a platform for the most promising of our regional, up and coming talent.

March 1 sees ace vocalist Natalie Rungan taking the ZJL stage when she appears with Melvin Peters on keyboard, Paki Peloyelo on drums and Philani Ngidi on bass. And fans can enjoy Natalie's artistry here the following evening, March 2, when she returns with her own band. Hot newcomer Mmagae Dammie from UKZN shows her paces at ZJL on March 3.

The following week, Sazi Dlamini returns on March 8, consolidating his success at the venue in February. While the artist for March 9 is still to be announced, hot news is that Paul Kock on sax is set to team with Burton Naidoo on keyboards on March 10.

Mandla Zikalala on bass is set to pull the crowds on March 15 with Samke Manjeya bringing his own distinctive style of vocals to the venue on March 16, and hot new band Sweet Concepts making their JZL bow on March 17.

Babalwa Menties brings more cool vocals to ZJL on March 22, with singer-guitarist Vusi Mkhize following on March 23rd. Thulile Zama, another star in the making from UKZN, takes the spotlight on March 24.

Durban's powerhouse jazz guitarist Mageshen Naidoo is set to pack them in with his ZJL appearance on March 29, and local favourites Jika will be back on March 30. Then stand by for lift-off with Burton Naidoo and Jerry Kunene as they bring the month to a close on March 31.

The music starts at 21h00 and there is a cover charge of R20.

The Zulu Jazz Lounge (formerly known as The Cellar) is situated in the Playhouse complex and the entrance is in Albany Grove. A parking at the Albany Grove Parkade offers 24 hour security on site, and ZJL doormen will gladly escort you back to your vehicle. Simply take a ticket, drive up the ramp and turn left, then proceed down to park on the ground floors. Present your ticket upon entry at the Zulu Jazz Lounge for validation. Please note ZJL is also open on Wednesdays, but is presently not open on Sundays.
