TWO-TONE SHOES (article first published : 2007-03-4)

Farook Khan's musical docu-drama, Two Tone Shoes brings the vibrant Durban community of the 1950s alive on stage at Suncoast.

South Africa’s latest singing sensation, Lee Marvin, is poised to make his professional debut on stage. Mr Marvin has no formal training but has always just sung from his soul from when he was a little boy.

The 1950’s was about people reaching out to establish a multi-cultural nation, against a government which demanded racial separation. It was the ultimate generation of protest. People demonstrated by eating, dancing, singing, boozing, gambling and falling in love right across the racial barriers.

The play is based on true stories and the focal point of this production is the battle for the right to use 15 taxi parking bays at the corner of Victoria and Grey street. The battle for control led to some of the deadliest gang warfare in Grey Street.

Two Tone Shoes is dedicated to the memory of four reporters: G R Naidoo, Bobby Harrypersadh, I A Khan and Henry Nxumalo who stood up to the gangs and exposed them.

All these milestones have been arranged and written into one play, bringing to the modern audience a world which is now a blurred memory among the present elderly.

Two Tone Shoes runs in the Suncoast Supa Nova Theatre on March 9 and 10 at 20h00. Ticket R70 booked through Computicket or available at Suncoast Box Office.
