SASMT COMPETITION (article first published : 2007-02-24)

The wheels are rolling to encourage teachers and parents of young music students to identify and enter candidates for this year's 19th national music competition for primary school learners.

The competition was launched in 1989 by the South African Society of Music Teachers: Tygerberg (SASMT) with support from Sanlam, to encourage potential and create a platform to develop fresh talent.

The competition is still the only national one for instrumentalists at primary school level and is conducted in four categories: Piano, Strings, Woodwind and Brass Instruments and Other Instruments (percussion, recorder, classical guitar and harp).

During the past 18 years the Sanlam competition has already put a number of young musicians on the road to even international acclaim. It creates the opportunity for promising students to compete at national level and catch the eye at an early stage.

Medals and other prizes worth almost R40,000 are at stake for participants and their teachers and, on top of that, the opportunity to show off their talent during spring in the Cape's newest auditorium!

The closing date for entries is April 20 and auditions will be held in the major centres, including Durban, at the end of May/early June. The competition itself will take place over four rounds in Parow in September.

All music teachers affiliated to the SASMT have particulars. Interested parties can also obtain entry forms from and direct enquiries to The Chairman, SASMT Tygerberg: Music Competition, PO Box 68, Parow 7499 or call 021 939 9105 (o/h) or 021 945 3861 (after 20h00) or fax 021 939 9123.
