NO WOMAN NO CRY (article first published : 2007-02-24)

Rita Marley, widow of the legendary Bob Marley, was recently in Durban to present a copy of her book, No Woman no Cry to the Mayor, Councillor Obed Mlaba, and to officiate at the opening of an exhibition of photographs of Bob Marley at the Durban Art Gallery. Accompanied by members of her family, she was also visiting the city to create awareness for Africa Unite 2007.

Then it was on to Gauteng where Constitution Hill in conjunction with Africa Unite 2007 launched Rita Marley’s book within the WORDS public programme strand in the Women’s jail. Apart from being the first revealing memories of the man that was Bob Marley, the book reveals where Rita Marley grew up, where she lives and how she was exposed to the Rastafarian life.

Africa Unite 2007 commenced on the honour rebel Bob Marley’s birthday, February 6, and continues throughout Black History Month to include Durban and Johannesburg.

The now annual Africa Unite events, launched in Ethiopia in 2005 and again realised in Ghana in 2006, came to life from the unwavering passion and spirit of Rita Marley. With her family, she was inspired to spread the spirit and legacy of Bob Marley, to continue to bring life to his Songs of Freedom and to actively work towards a united Africa in their lifetime.

The Africa Unite events have begun a global movement that continues to create worldwide awareness for vital issues affecting Africa as well as realizing important and meaningful change that will contribute to lasting solutions.
