KONSTANTIN SOUKHOVETSKI (article first published : 2007-02-21)

Launched on a brilliant career by a string of international competition triumphs, and with critically lauded debuts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Centre behind him, Moscow-born, New York-based Konstantin Soukhovetski is gaining wide recognition as one of the brightest young stars of today’s piano firmament.

A distinguished, award-winning product of the famed Julliard School of Music, where his numerous scholarships included that of the legendary Vladimir Horowitz, Konstantin returns to South Africa by public demand. His South African tour in 2005 was a huge success and in the words of Die Burger’s music critic in Cape Town, he “overwhelmed the audience”.

Friends of Music will present a recital by Konstantin Soukhovetski in a programme that includes Tchaikovsky’s Selections from The Seasons, Op. 37b; Shostakovich’s Seven Dolls’ Dances, Op. 91c and Scriabin’s Sonata No. 3 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 23. Also to be performed will be Sonata No.2 in B flat minor, Op.35 by Chopin and The Hours (selections from the motion picture, arranged for piano solo) by Glass.

The recital takes place on March 6 at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road, Durban. There is safe parking. Book at Computicket.
