LEVI'S YOUNG GUNS (article first published : 2007-02-21)

2006 will go down in South Africa's musical history as the year when Levi's Young Guns smashed its way onto the live scene, turning the status quo on its head in the process. These events, happening at monthly intervals throughout the country, established a new voice for an alternative spirit that had, up until then, not enjoyed the platform it deserves. With a DIY attitude that spanned many genres and appealed to a whole range of fans, Levi's Young Guns uncovered tomorrow's talent while it was still hot, rough and raw.

Applying the mantra of 'it's not broke, don't fix it', Levi's Young Guns is gearing up for another whirlwind tour in 2007, intent on putting more undiscovered talent on the musical map. And, true to the initiative's deep belief of breaking new ground, the call is going out for all trailblazing acts to submit demos so that they can share in the awesome experience that is Levi's Young Guns.

It's more about attitude than genre. That's the kind of act that Levi's Young Guns hopes to attract for the 2007 gigs. Musicians with an uncontrollable urge to express themselves through their music who don't follow trends yet always sound fresh. They don't conform to any particular genre or style, hold a perfect note or be classically trained, but they know how to turn on a crowd and play with raw energy.

Levi's Young Guns wants these acts. Dressed by Levi's they will get the opportunity to perform on stage as part of a nationwide tour starting in April and gigging through Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. They will be given the publicity that will take them out of the garage and into the public eye.

So, this call goes out to all the real musos: those who play straight from the heart as opposed to from the cover of a glossy magazine, say the organisers. If you think you've got it or if you know someone else who definitely has it, get a demo into Levi's and become part of the revolution.

Send demo tapes to: Oppikoppi: Levi's Young Guns submission, PO Box 2000, Brooklyn Square, 0075. Further information at www.levi.co.za and click on Levi's Young Guns
