BENSON & JARREAU (article first published : 2007-01-26)

Two giants of the world's music industry - George Benson and Al Jarreau will perform together in three cities in South Africa. Their short South African double-bill includes a private concert performance as part of the official opening ceremony of the Arena at the International Convention Centre, Durban on March 20.

While enjoying the world-wide success of Givin' It Up, their first full length CD collaboration together, (released on October 24 2006), George Benson and Al Jarreau recently began a worldwide promotional tour, performing only in a few selected countries, including South Africa. Local audiences have the rare opportunity and privilege of seeing two of the world's finest artists on stage together, accompanied by the Benson/Jarreau touring musicians.

Says SA tour promoter, Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management: "This is a not-to-be-missed concert tour and a real coup for South Africa. The combination of George Benson and Al Jarreau is sheer musical genius. They are consummate and engaging performers each capable of selling out an all-nighter by themselves and still barely denting their catalogue of timeless classics."

Throughout his career George Benson has embraced everything from straight-ahead jazz to contemporary jazz and R&B/pop vocals. He is one of a handful of artists who have achieved major critical and commercial success in different genres and this pedigree makes him one of the most respected performers of the past 30 years. Al Jarreau's unique vocal style and his innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed performers of our time.

Between them, George Benson and Al Jarreau have sold over 50 million records, had 20 number one hits and won 13 GrammyŌ Awards across pop, jazz and R&B categories. Givin' It Up marks the first time the two artists have recorded together in their 30-year friendship. The Benson and Jarreau collaboration resulted in new arrangements of each other's respective biggest hits, Breezin' and Mornin'.

Givin' it Up features guest appearances from Paul McCartney, Marcus Miller and Chris Botti. It includes Tutu, a homage to Bishop Desmond Tutu, featuring special guest Herbie Hancock on acoustic piano. It has been nominated for three Grammy Awards to be announced on February 11.

In an interview with jazzreview.com on working together Jarreau said: "George was always an idol of mine. He is one of those people who works on an entirely different level than most people. He is like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, that is the level he is at. He sings so good it makes me mad." Says Benson: "Our favourite thing is to be in front of an audience and to show them what we've been working on and to create something that is only for the moment, never gonna happen exactly like that again."

The Durban concert takes place at the International Convention Centre on Human Right's Day, March 21, at 19h00. Other performances take place in Johannesburg on March 18 and in Cape Town on March 22. Ticket prices range from R200 - R450. Book at Computicket on 083 915 8000 or on line at www.computicket.com
