JAMAICAN JAM (article first published : 2007-01-23)

Discover what happens when two intrepid South African rastas go on a pilgrimage to pay homage to Bob Marley’s home country in Jamaican Jam to run at the Catalina Theatre shortly.

Starring the recent award-winning funny man, Clinton Philander, Eric ‘Coolfire’ Hadebe, Hamish Kyd, Rowan Bartlett and newcomer Kim Sanssoucie, this musical revue pays homage to the great body of Jamaican music that has influenced world music.

From the Calypso sounds made famous by Belafonte, to reggae, ragga, limbo and the pop sounds of Billy Ocean and Bobby Mcfaren, Jamaican Jam show promises to keep toes tapping with familiar, funny and moving songs as Chips and Rasta journey through Jamaica.

First staged in 1998 at the Glenwood “old boys” club in Durban North and directed by Peter Court, this version is reworked and updated and directed this time around by Themi Venturas.

Jamaican Jam runs at Catalina Theatre from February 6 to March 11 March. Tickets R65 (buy one get one free from February 6 to 11).

There will be a Valentine’s Special on February 14 when tickets at R120 pp includes finger supper, champagne, chocolates and romantic boat ride around Durban Bay.

Bookings through Catalina on 031 305 6889.
