JOHN NTSEPE (article first published : 2006-12-24)

The Friends of Music Association will present a recital by pianist John Ntsepe, winner of the 2005 Marc Raubenheimer Scholarship on January 8.

The concert is in memory of Professor Lionel Bowman who nurtured the career of this young artist.

Born in Sebokeng, John Ntsepe, is currently completing his MMus (Performing Arts) degree at the University of Pretoria under the supervision of Professor Ella Fourie. He has been awarded many prestigious prizes such as a special prize for the Lionel Bowman Beethoven Competition, was the overall winner in the instrumental category of the annual UNISA music Festival and in 2005 won the Marc Raubenheimer Scholarship. This gives him the opportunity to perform with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2006, John was featured in the October edition of the Classic Feel Magazine as their Sasol Young Musician of the Month. He is the recipient of a scholarship from DAAD and a bursary from the Ackerman Foundation, plus numerous invitations to give recitals at various venues such as the Hilton Festival in KZN and the Franschoek Spring Festival in the Cape sponsored by the UNISA music Foundation.

The concert will take place at 19h45 on January 9 at the Durban Jewish Center, 44 Old Fort Road. There is safe parking.

Friends of Music recitals for early in 2007 include pianist Vladimir Miloševic on February 13 and Korean soprano Ji-Hyun Park on February 27. Booking is at Computicket.
