DOCKYARD OPEN MIC (article first published : 2006-12-18)

Here’s a call from David Marks of 3rd Ear Music to all singer songwriting folk - drop anchors at the laid-back ambient Dockyard Theatre every Monday.

“The Dockyard Theatre, Charlie's Corner, on Musgrave is a magnificent music venue - wonderful laid-back ambience (indoors and out), great sound, staff, menu and bar; an acoustic venue and a platform for what Folk are saying and singing here in Durban,” says David.

December 11 and 18 will be Open Mic Nights at Dockyard Supper Theatre at Musgrave Centre. David Marks will host this acoustic evening of folk music and contemporary songs at Dockyard’s Charlie’s Corner. A stage and microphones will be available and the evening will offer a mix 'n meeting space for any local singer songwriters, musicians and music followers - from folk ‘n jazz to Maskandi and poetry.

Features coming up include Madala Kunene, Colin Shamley, Steve & Tara Fataar, The Durban Folk Club, Mim Erasmus, Fiona Tozer, The Bandits and more.

“So, if you have a song and need to say something but the only way you can (without getting) tongue-tied is to lay it out in a poem and rap it up in a chord or two,: says David Marks. “Put your name down on 031 205-2743 and tune up for a sound check!”

Open Mic sessions take place at 19h00 for 20h00. The Dockyard’s full bar and reasonably priced menu will be available.

3rd Ear (folk) Music @ the Dockyard aims to raise funds and awareness of 3rd Ear’s Hidden Years Music Archive Project - an important hidden music history and heritage that needs to be kept alive - CDs & DVDs will be on sale. More information on 083 359 5610 or 031 205-2743.
