MALUJU ZULU MUSICAL (article first published : 2006-12-15)

Presented by Ubuhle Be Africa in association with the Playhouse Company, Maluju Zulu is written and directed by Bonginkosi Shangase. This tale of love and war will make a return season to the Playhouse.

Maluju Zulu was a successful box-office hit at the Johannesburg Market Theatre in 2004, after being chosen the best of the Zwakala Festival at the Market theatre Laboratory.

The production tells a story of love and war in the rural areas of Nkandla in the north of KZN during the time of British occupation. The story is told through narration and exuberant dance, song and poetry by the 22 member-strong cast.

The phrase Maluju means “it is enough”. It is usually used when opponents indicate that they want to cease hostilities. In this story, wars in rural communities are leaving behind scores of widows and orphans.

Suitable for the whole family over the festive season, Maluju Zulu is created for pure entertainment and audiences will be impressed by the talent of the dancers and singers.

Maluju Zulu runs in the Playhouse Drama from December 20 to 30.
