MARIETTE HEENOP (article first published : 2006-12-15)

Vodacom Summer Festivals on both the south and north KwaZulu-Natal coasts will see a varied mix of musicians entertain holidaymakers this weekend.

On the evening of December 15, Amanzimtoti will host Kurt Darren who needs no introduction as one of South Africa’s most popular Afrikaans singers. He will be joined at the Lords and Legends Sports Café (starting at 18h30) by Bok van Blerk and his new and exciting Afrikaans band, De La Rey; Spoonfeedas who will perform their 10 successful singles including So I Wait, and local female vocalist Mariette Heenop.

From gracing the stage with the likes of Steve Hofmeyr to performing a touching tribute to Barbra Streisand, Durbanite Mariette Heenop is busy establishing herself as one of the upcoming voices in local music circles. Classically trained, she has performed selectively on the local supper theatre circuit the past five years. Accompanied by renowned Durban jazz pianist, Melvin Peters, she will perform songs at the Vodacom festival by the likes of Coenie de Villiers, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Laurika Rauch, Carole King, Vaya Con Dios, Norah Jones, Nina Simone and, of course, Streisand.

On December 16th, the Day of Reconciliation, Mariette Heenop and Melvin Peters will travel to Richards Bay where they will again join Bok van Blerk and Spoonfeedas, as well as the singing Afrikaans rock drummer Ghapi (formerly of Georgia fame), at the Vodacom Music festival at Meerensee Primary School. The Richards Bay festival starts at 16h00.
