ROADSHOCK (article first published : 2006-12-4)

Another new stage in Durban, this time in the building that once housed Cloud 9, gets to host an exciting and diverse trio of groups as summer really starts to heat up in holiday town.

It’s been nearly seven years since Somerset West based Dorp left South Africa for the bright lights of the UK music scene and the delights of London town. Since then, their musical style has mutated, the line-up has altered and Dorp have gradually become a force to be reckoned with in the London underground indie scene! This December they tour South Africa to reacquaint themselves with fans and friends and introduce their latest EP Omnipresent Bob.

It hasn’t taken Cassette long to shake up the music industry both in South Africa and internationally. Having only been together since March 2005, their debut single Your Star has already ripped open radio stations worldwide, landing up on the Hi5 charts of South Africa’s premiere national station, 5FM – sticking firmly on the chart for 16 weeks! In addition to getting incredible play listing and support from regional and campus stations, Cassette have also cracked one of London’s biggest stations, XFM, after winning an Unsigned Battle on the station – the very same competition that launched supergroup, Keane, into the UK music scene.

Cassette has been labelled “one of South Africa’s best live bands” by entertainment website JHB Live. Cape Town Argus journalists describe them as having “more energy in one performance than most bands have in a lifetime.”

Bed on Bricks was formed in February 2003 in the boerewors triangle - namely Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa.

It was initiated by former Sons of Trout frontman Mike Hardy (vocals/sax) and also comprises of Tim Rankin (drums), Dave van der Linden (guitar) and Schalk van der Merwe (bass).

After four months of introductions and pleasantries, the band shuffled into the studio to record their first album Humanarium. Extensive touring followed and before long the band notched up slots on most major music festivals around the country. With an ever growing fan-base, ‘bricks’ eagerly cruised back into the studio to record their second album, If You See Kay. Another group that delivers a lively stage performance!

The performance takes place on December 15 at Raffles Nite Club, McCausland Drive, Umhlanga Rocks. Tickets R40 at the door and doors open at 20h00. More information on 083 463 8044 or 083 777 0252.
